About PDF to TXT

This tool reads the text layer of a PDF and saves it as a plain .txt file, with a 'Page N' label before each page's text. It only works on PDFs that contain real text, the kind you can highlight in a viewer. A scanned page is just a picture of text, and since there is no OCR here, a scan comes out empty.

When it helps

  • Pasting the wording of a report or contract into an email, chat or ticket without the PDF's formatting
  • Feeding a long PDF into a search index, a script or a word counter
  • Quoting passages from a research paper when copying from the viewer keeps breaking lines
  • Checking whether a PDF has a text layer at all before you send it to someone who needs to search it

Tips

  • Each page's text comes out as one continuous block. Original line breaks, columns and table cells are not kept, so plan to add paragraph breaks yourself.
  • If the output has only page labels and no words, the PDF is image-based (scanned or photographed). You will need an OCR tool for that file.
  • Some PDFs store text as separate fragments, which can produce odd spacing inside words or a jumbled reading order in multi-column layouts.
