About WEBM to GIF

Convert WebM video, the VP8, VP9 or AV1 format used by browsers, screen recorders and many download tools, into an animated GIF. Use it when a site or app accepts GIFs but rejects WebM uploads. The frames are resized to 640 pixels wide and sampled at the frame rate you choose.

When it helps

  • Converting a browser-based screen recording (many record to WebM by default) into a GIF for a pull request or ticket.
  • Posting a WebM clip to a platform or messenger that only previews GIF.
  • Turning a WebM sticker or short loop into a GIF that older software can display.

Tips

  • WebM files from screen recorders often have a variable frame rate. Picking a fixed GIF frame rate such as 12 fps evens out playback.
  • If the WebM has a transparent background (VP8 or VP9 with alpha), do not expect the GIF to keep it; plan for a solid background.
  • Keep WebM-to-GIF for short loops. A WebM is usually many times smaller than the GIF it becomes, so only convert when GIF is actually required.

Good to know

Quick answers about webm to gif in your browser.

Not technically. WebM gives full colour, much smaller files and optional audio. GIF wins only on compatibility: it works as a plain image in places that do not play video, such as many email clients and older forums.

Most WebM files decode fine, but very large files are slow in the browser's WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Try a shorter clip or trim it first.

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.

No. Files are read and processed locally in your browser, so they never leave your device.
