About MP4 to GIF
Convert an MP4 or M4V file, the format phones, screen recorders and most editing apps export, into an animated GIF. The H.264 video is decoded with FFmpeg, resized to 640 pixels wide, resampled to your chosen frame rate and saved as a GIF that loops endlessly.
When it helps
- Sharing a phone clip as a GIF in a group chat or on a forum that does not autoplay video.
- Turning a short MP4 tutorial step into an inline animation for a help article.
- Converting an exported animation from an editor into a GIF sticker or emote draft.
Tips
- Phone MP4s are often 30 or 60 fps. Dropping to 10 to 15 fps cuts the GIF size dramatically and still looks smooth for most content.
- Cut the MP4 down to the exact moment first with the trim tool. Every extra second adds a full set of frames to the GIF.
- Any audio track in the MP4 is discarded, since GIF cannot carry sound.
- If the GIF comes out too large for a platform's upload limit, run it through Compress GIF, which caps width at 480 px and reduces the palette.

MP4 can show millions of colours, while each GIF frame is limited to 256. Smooth gradients get approximated with dithering patterns, which reads as grain. Flat graphics and screen captures convert much more cleanly than camera footage.
