About MP4 to MP3
MP4 files usually carry AAC audio alongside H.264 video. This tool decodes that audio track and saves it as a standalone MP3 at the bitrate you pick, which is handy when you only need the sound and want a much smaller file.
When it helps
- Turning a downloaded talk or tutorial MP4 into an MP3 for a music player or car stereo that only reads MP3.
- Keeping the audio of a phone video of a concert or speech without the large video file.
- Preparing audio from an MP4 interview for transcription software.
Tips
- An MP3 at 128 kbps is roughly 1 MB per minute, and 320 kbps is about 2.4 MB per minute, regardless of how large the MP4 was.
- For spoken word, 96 to 128 kbps is plenty. For music, 192 kbps or more keeps cymbals and high frequencies cleaner.
- M4V files from iTunes-style exports are accepted too, as long as they are not DRM-protected.

Renaming does not change the data inside. The audio in an MP4 is usually AAC, not MP3, so many players will refuse the renamed file. This tool actually re-encodes the audio to MP3.
Match or slightly undercut the source. Most MP4 audio is around 128 to 192 kbps, so 192 kbps is a good default; going higher just makes the file bigger.
