About Crop Video
Crop Video removes pixels from the top, right, bottom and left edges of the frame and saves the result as an H.264 MP4. Use it to cut away black bars, a recorded taskbar, a watermark in a corner or anything else at the edge of the picture.
When it helps
- Removing black letterbox or pillarbox bars that were burned into a video.
- Cutting the browser tabs or taskbar out of a screen recording.
- Trimming a distracting edge or a corner logo from a clip before reposting it.
- Tightening the framing of a shot that was filmed too wide.
Tips
- Crop values are pixels from each edge of the original frame, so check the source resolution first. On a 1920x1080 video, cropping 240 from left and right leaves a 1440x1080 (4:3) frame.
- To make a vertical 9:16 crop from a 1920x1080 video, remove a total of about 1312 pixels across left and right, for example 656 from each side.
- Keep total crop amounts even numbers where you can; H.264 with standard color sampling needs even width and height.
- Lower the CRF slider if the cropped area will be scaled up later, since any compression artifacts will be magnified.
