About Extract Video Frames

This tool saves frames from a video as individual JPG or PNG images at a rate you choose, then bundles them into a single ZIP download. It is useful for building image sets, picking stills or studying motion frame by frame.

When it helps

  • Creating a dataset of images from a video for machine learning or photogrammetry.
  • Grabbing one still per second from a long clip to find the best shot.
  • Breaking a short animation or sports move into frames for analysis.
  • Getting images out of a video to build a contact sheet or storyboard.

Tips

  • Frames per second controls how often an image is taken. At 1 fps a 5-minute video gives 300 images; use 0.1 for one frame every 10 seconds, or up to 30 for every frame of most videos.
  • Maximum frames caps the total (up to 2000) so a long video does not produce a huge ZIP. Raise it if your fps and duration would need more.
  • JPG files are much smaller; PNG is lossless and better if you will edit or analyse the images. Full-resolution PNGs from 4K video can make a very large ZIP.
  • Images are numbered in order (frame-00001, frame-00002 and so on), so they sort correctly in any file browser.
