About Video to MP3
This tool pulls the soundtrack out of a video file and saves it as an MP3. It works with MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and M4V, and the picture is dropped entirely, so you get a small audio file you can play on anything.
When it helps
- Saving the audio of a recorded lecture, webinar or meeting to listen to on a commute.
- Getting a voice memo or interview out of a phone video so it can be transcribed.
- Extracting a song or backing track from a video you recorded at a rehearsal.
- Pulling the audio from an MKV or WebM file for use in a podcast or audio editor.
Tips
- Use the bitrate slider to balance size and quality: 128 kbps is fine for speech, 192 kbps (the default) suits most music, and 256 to 320 kbps is for when you want to keep as much detail as possible.
- Picking a bitrate higher than the source audio does not add quality. Phone videos usually carry AAC audio at roughly 128 to 256 kbps.
- The video must contain an audio track. Screen recordings made without a microphone or system audio have nothing to extract.

The audio is re-encoded to MP3, so there is a small generational loss. At 192 kbps or higher it is very hard to hear for most recordings.
This tool converts the full soundtrack. Trim the video first with the Trim Video tool, or trim the resulting MP3 with an audio trimmer.
