About Word Frequency Counter
This tool counts how often every word appears in your text and saves the result as a CSV with four columns: rank, word, count and percent. Words are ranked from most to least frequent, so you can open the file in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers and sort, filter or chart it.
When it helps
- Finding the main keywords in a blog post or competitor page for SEO work.
- Checking a manuscript for words you overuse, such as 'just', 'really' or a pet phrase.
- Building a vocabulary list from a book chapter or set of course notes.
- Doing a quick word-frequency analysis of survey answers or interview transcripts.
Tips
- 'Ignore common words' is on by default and removes English function words like 'the', 'and' and 'of'. Turn it off if you are studying writing style rather than topics.
- Raise the minimum word length to 3 or 4 to drop short words and stray letters from the list.
- With case sensitivity off, 'Apple' and 'apple' are merged into one lowercase entry. Turn it on to tell proper nouns apart from ordinary words.
- The percent column is each word's share of the words that were counted after filtering, not of the whole text.
