About Text to Binary
Convert text into binary: each character is encoded as UTF-8 bytes, and each byte is written as eight 0s and 1s. Plain English letters take one byte, so 'A' becomes 01000001, while accented letters, other scripts and emoji take two to four bytes each.
When it helps
- Learning or teaching how computers store text as bytes.
- Writing secret-looking messages for puzzles, escape rooms or geocaches.
- Making binary text for designs, T-shirts or social posts.
- Checking the exact bytes of a string when debugging encoding problems.
Tips
- Keep the space separator if anyone will decode it by hand, since it shows where each byte starts and ends.
- Choose 'New line' to put one byte per line, which is easier to annotate in teaching material.
- Binary is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can turn it back into text instantly.
