About Remove Accents
Strip accents and other diacritics from text so that é becomes e, ñ becomes n and ü becomes u. With the ligature option on, letters that are not just an accent on a base letter are also spelled out: ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, œ becomes oe, ø becomes o, ł becomes l and þ becomes th.
When it helps
- Preparing names for systems that only accept plain ASCII, such as older databases, airline forms or payment fields.
- Making file names that will not break on servers or zip tools.
- Normalizing data so 'José' and 'Jose' match when you de-duplicate or search a list.
- Cleaning text before building usernames or email addresses.
Tips
- Only diacritics are removed. Letters from non-Latin alphabets such as Greek, Cyrillic or Chinese are left as they are.
- Turn off 'Expand ß, æ, ø...' if you only want accent marks removed and want those letters kept.
- Removing accents can change meaning in some languages, for example Spanish 'año' and 'ano'. Keep the original for anything people will read.

Neither has a simple built-in function for it. Copy the column, paste it here, convert, and paste the result back. Line order is kept, so the rows still line up.
The tool removes the diacritic mark itself, which is the general rule across languages. German spelling conventions write ü as ue when umlauts are unavailable, so use find and replace afterwards if you need that.
