About Hex to Text

Decode hexadecimal bytes back into readable text. It accepts hex in most common formats, such as spaced pairs, one continuous string, 0x or \x prefixes, percent-encoding and colon or comma separators, and reads the bytes as UTF-8.

When it helps

  • Reading strings from a hex dump, packet capture or debugger output.
  • Decoding escaped byte sequences like \x48\x65 found in code or logs.
  • Solving CTF challenges and puzzles that hide messages in hex.
  • Checking what a hex value stored in a database or config file actually says.

Tips

  • Prefixes (0x, \x, %, U+) and separators (spaces, commas, colons, semicolons, dashes, pipes) are removed automatically before decoding.
  • A continuous hex string must have an even number of digits, since each byte takes two. An odd count means a digit is missing.
  • Hex dumps with offset columns and an ASCII column on the right need those columns removed first, or the offsets will be decoded as text too.

Strings made only of percent-encoded bytes, like %48%69, decode correctly because the % signs are removed. Full URLs with normal letters between the codes will not decode correctly, because those letters are treated as hex digits or rejected.

The bytes do not form valid UTF-8 text. The data may be binary rather than text, or use another encoding such as UTF-16 or Windows-1252.
