About Extract/Repack ZIP

Extract a RAR, 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ or ZIP archive and repack its contents as a standard ZIP. ZIP opens natively on Windows, macOS and most phones, so this is the quickest way to make an archive usable for someone who does not have 7-Zip, WinRAR or a command line. Folder paths inside the archive are kept.

When it helps

  • Converting a RAR download into a ZIP that Windows or macOS can open without extra software.
  • Turning a 7z or .tar.gz into a ZIP for a colleague or upload form that only accepts ZIP.
  • Repacking an archive into a ZIP so it can be previewed in cloud drives and email clients, which usually only look inside ZIP files.

Tips

  • Password-protected or encrypted archives cannot be extracted; the tool stops with an error instead of producing an empty ZIP.
  • Only files are carried over, so empty folders in the original archive do not appear in the new ZIP.
  • The whole archive is extracted in browser memory before repacking. Multi-gigabyte archives may be slow or run out of memory.
  • Multi-part archives (such as .part1.rar or .7z.001) need all parts joined, which this tool does not do; it works on single-file archives.

Good to know

Quick answers about extract/repack zip in your browser.

Select the .rar file and convert. The contents are extracted locally and written to a new ZIP with the same folder structure, which you can then open with the built-in tools on any computer.

No. Encrypted archives are detected and rejected. Extract them with the password in WinRAR or 7-Zip first.

Usually not. RAR and 7z (LZMA) generally compress better than ZIP's Deflate, so expect the ZIP to be somewhat larger. You gain compatibility, not size.

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.

No. Files are read and processed locally in your browser, so they never leave your device.
