About Find and Replace

Search a block of text for a word, phrase or pattern and replace every match at once. You can match case, limit matches to whole words, or switch on regular expressions to use capture groups and patterns. The result tells you how many replacements were made.

When it helps

  • Renaming a product, person or term throughout a long document.
  • Deleting every occurrence of a word or tracking code by leaving the replacement empty.
  • Reformatting dates or names with a regex and capture groups, for example swapping 'Last, First' to 'First Last'.
  • Cleaning exported data, such as replacing semicolons with commas.

Tips

  • Turn on 'Whole words only' to replace 'cat' without changing 'category' or 'concatenate'.
  • In regex mode, use $1, $2 or $<name> in the replacement to insert captured groups, $& for the whole match, and \n or \t for a new line or tab.
  • Without regex mode, characters like ., * and ? are matched literally, so you do not need to escape them.
  • If the summary says no matches were found, check the 'Match case' setting first.

Turn on 'Use regular expression' and type \n in the 'Replace with' box. For example, finding ', ' and replacing with \n puts each comma-separated item on its own line.

JavaScript regular expressions with the Unicode flag, so \d, \w, \s, lookaheads, lookbehinds, named groups and \p{L} for any letter all work. The search always replaces every match.
