About Random Line Picker

Paste a list with one entry per line and pick one or more at random. It works as a name picker for classrooms, a raffle or giveaway drawer, or a way to settle a decision. By default each line can only be picked once, like drawing names from a hat.

When it helps

  • Drawing giveaway winners from a list of commenters or entrants.
  • Choosing a random student, team member or presenter.
  • Picking a random sample of rows from a list for spot checks.
  • Letting chance choose a restaurant, movie or task from a shortlist.

Tips

  • Leave 'Allow the same line twice' off for raffles so nobody can win twice. Turn it on for repeated independent picks, such as simulating dice rolls.
  • If you ask for more picks than there are lines and repeats are off, you get every line in a random order.
  • To give someone more chances, list their name more than once.
  • Remove duplicate entries first if each person should have exactly one chance.
