About List Archive Contents

See what is inside a ZIP, RAR, 7z, TAR, ISO or CAB archive without extracting it. The tool produces a text listing of every file with its path, uncompressed size and modification date, plus a summary line with the file count, total uncompressed size and archive size. It is a quick way to check an archive before you commit to unpacking it.

When it helps

  • Checking that a download contains what it claims before extracting it.
  • Finding out how much disk space an archive will need once unpacked.
  • Producing a plain-text inventory of a backup archive to keep alongside it.
  • Locating a particular file inside a large archive so you know its exact path.

Tips

  • The listing is sorted alphabetically by path, so files in the same folder are grouped together.
  • Comparing the uncompressed total with the archive size shows how well it is compressed. A big gap is normal for text; a small one suggests already-compressed media.
  • Password-protected archives cannot be listed; the tool reports that encrypted archives are not supported.
  • Sizes are shown uncompressed, the space each file will take once extracted, not its compressed size inside the archive.
