About Hash Generator
Paste text or drop a file to compute MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and CRC32 in one go. The SHA family uses the browser's Web Crypto API, while MD5 and CRC32 are computed in JavaScript, and nothing you hash leaves your device.
When it helps
- Checking a download against a published MD5 or SHA checksum.
- Generating a content hash for cache busting, deduplication or an ETag.
- Comparing the CRC32 of a file against the value stored in a ZIP archive.
- Reproducing a hash value from documentation or a test fixture.
Tips
- "Trim trailing newline" is on by default because many editors and copy actions add one, which would change the hash. Turn it off if the newline is part of the input. It only affects pasted text, not files.
- Text is hashed as UTF-8 bytes. The same characters in another encoding produce a different hash.
- Use "Uppercase hex" if you need to match a tool that prints uppercase checksums; the value is the same.
Good to know
Quick answers about hash generator in your browser.
No. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for collision resistance, and all of these hashes are fast, which makes brute-forcing leaked password hashes cheap. Store passwords with a slow, salted algorithm such as Argon2, bcrypt or scrypt.
Usually a newline. echo adds one unless you use echo -n. Check that the trim setting matches what your command hashes.
No. CRC32 is a checksum designed to detect accidental errors, and it is easy to create collisions on purpose. Use SHA-256 to detect tampering.
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.
No. Files are read and processed locally in your browser, so they never leave your device.
