About Mute Video
Mute Video removes the audio track completely and saves the picture as an H.264 MP4. The result has no sound stream at all, rather than a silent one, which is what many platforms and editors expect for background or B-roll footage.
When it helps
- Removing background chatter, wind noise or music from a clip before sharing it.
- Preparing silent background video for a website, where autoplay usually requires muted media.
- Stripping copyrighted music from a recording before adding your own soundtrack.
- Making B-roll clips that will be laid under narration in an editor.
Tips
- The video is re-encoded, so you can also use the CRF slider to make the muted file smaller at the same time.
- If you only want the sound quieter rather than gone, use the Change Video Volume tool instead.
- Keep the original if you might need the audio again; once removed it cannot be recovered from the muted file.
