About Adjust Video Colors

Adjust Video Colors fixes dark, washed-out or dull footage by changing brightness, contrast, saturation and gamma across the whole video. The audio is kept and the corrected result is saved as an H.264 MP4.

When it helps

  • Brightening an underexposed indoor or evening phone video.
  • Adding punch to flat footage from an action camera or webcam.
  • Toning down oversaturated colors from a phone's vivid mode.
  • Making clips from different cameras look more alike before merging them.

Tips

  • Try gamma before brightness for dark footage. Raising gamma above 100 percent lifts shadows and midtones without washing out blacks the way brightness does.
  • Small changes go a long way: contrast around 110 to 120 percent and saturation around 110 to 130 percent is often enough.
  • Setting saturation to 0 percent gives a black and white video; values above 150 percent quickly make skin tones look unnatural.
  • Brightening very dark footage also reveals noise. Run Video Filters & Effects with denoise afterwards if it looks grainy.

Good to know

Quick answers about adjust video colors in your browser.

Start by raising gamma to around 130 to 150 percent, then add a small brightness increase if needed. Check a dark scene and a bright scene so highlights do not blow out.

Brightness shifts every pixel lighter or darker by the same amount. Gamma mainly changes the midtones, so it brightens a dark image while keeping blacks dark and whites from clipping.
