About GIF to MP4

Convert an animated GIF into an H.264 MP4 video. The same animation is usually many times smaller as MP4, because video compression only stores what changes between frames and is not limited to 256 colours. This is the same trick large sites use when they serve GIFs as silent looping videos.

When it helps

  • Uploading a GIF to Instagram, TikTok or other platforms that accept video but not GIF.
  • Speeding up a web page by replacing a heavy GIF with a muted, looping MP4 in a video tag.
  • Adding a GIF to a video editing project that expects a standard video file.

Tips

  • Use the video quality slider (CRF 18 to 40) to trade size for quality. Lower numbers look better; around 23 to 28 is a good range for most GIFs.
  • MP4 files do not loop on their own. To mimic GIF behaviour on a website, use a video tag with autoplay, loop, muted and playsinline.
  • Transparent areas in the GIF are not kept, since standard H.264 MP4 has no alpha channel.
  • H.264 with standard chroma subsampling needs even pixel dimensions. If a GIF with an odd width or height fails, resize it by one pixel first.

Good to know

Quick answers about gif to mp4 in your browser.

GIF compresses each frame on its own with LZW, while H.264 predicts frames from earlier ones and compresses far more aggressively. Reductions of 80 to 90 percent are common for animated GIFs.

Yes. The output uses H.264 video in an MP4 container, which almost every platform and phone accepts. Some platforms set a minimum duration, so a very short GIF may need to be longer.

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you process.

No. Files are read and processed locally in your browser, so they never leave your device.
