About Resize GIF
Resize an animated GIF to a new width between 16 and 2000 pixels. The height is calculated from the original aspect ratio, every frame is kept, and the GIF is re-encoded with a palette built for the new size. It is useful for making a GIF fit an avatar slot, a column in a document or an upload size limit.
When it helps
- Shrinking a large GIF to fit a chat emote, avatar or forum signature.
- Making a GIF the exact width of a blog column or README so it is not scaled by the browser.
- Reducing file size before uploading to a site with a strict limit.
Tips
- Halving the width cuts the pixel count to a quarter, which usually reduces file size substantially.
- Enlarging a GIF works, but it cannot add detail. Upscaled pixel art may look soft because the scaler smooths edges.
- For emotes and stickers, check the platform's required size (often square). Crop to square with Crop GIF first, then resize.
