About GIF to APNG
Convert an animated GIF into an animated PNG (APNG). Every GIF frame is fully composited and stored losslessly in the APNG, so the animation looks identical but is saved in a modern format that all current browsers support. It is useful when a platform or workflow asks for APNG specifically.
When it helps
- Preparing an animated sticker for a platform that requires APNG uploads.
- Getting a clean, lossless frame-by-frame copy of a GIF to edit further in tools that handle APNG better.
- Moving an animation into a format that supports full colour and alpha for later editing.
Tips
- Converting does not add colours that were not there. The GIF's 256-colour frames are copied as they are, so the APNG will not look better than the source.
- The APNG may be larger than the GIF, because each frame is stored as a complete full-size image without palette reduction.
- Frame delays shorter than 40 ms are raised to 40 ms, which matches how browsers treat very fast GIF frames anyway.
- The output file uses the .png extension, as APNG files normally do.
