About Change GIF Speed
Speed up or slow down an animated GIF by changing how long each frame stays on screen. The slider goes from 0.1x (ten times slower) to 5x faster, and the GIF is re-encoded with an optimised palette. It is handy for GIFs that drag on or flash past too quickly to read.
When it helps
- Slowing a screen-recording GIF so viewers can follow each click.
- Speeding up a long, slow animation so it gets to the point.
- Making a slow-motion version of a sports or reaction GIF.
Tips
- GIF frame delays are stored in hundredths of a second, and many browsers play delays below about 0.02 seconds much slower than intended. Very high speed settings on a GIF that is already fast may not look any faster.
- Slowing down does not create new in-between frames; each frame is just held longer. Below roughly 0.5x, motion may start to look choppy.
- Changing speed does not drop frames, so the file size stays roughly the same. Use Compress GIF afterwards if you also need it smaller.
Good to know
Quick answers about change gif speed in your browser.
Set the speed slider below 1x. At 0.5x the GIF runs at half speed and takes twice as long to loop.
Browsers enforce a minimum frame delay, and very short delays get bumped up rather than played faster. If the GIF already has short delays, it cannot go much faster without removing frames, which Compress GIF can do with its frame rate setting.

No. Files are read and processed locally in your browser, so they never leave your device.
