About Compress PNG

PNG is lossless, so a normal re-save rarely makes it smaller. This tool uses color quantization instead: it reduces the image to a limited palette of colors while keeping the alpha channel, which can shrink screenshots, icons and graphics dramatically. The quality slider sets how many colors are kept.

When it helps

  • Making transparent logos and UI graphics lighter for a website without switching to JPG.
  • Shrinking large screenshots before adding them to documentation or bug reports.
  • Reducing the size of PNG illustrations and diagrams for email or chat.

Tips

  • Flat graphics, screenshots and icons compress well because they use few colors. Photos saved as PNG can show banding, so compress those as JPG or WebP instead.
  • Lower quality means a smaller palette and a smaller file. Watch smooth gradients and shadows for visible steps as you go down.
  • At the very top of the slider the image is saved losslessly, so you'll only gain from reduced dimensions there.

Yes. Quantization reduces colors but preserves the alpha channel, so cut-outs and soft edges stay transparent.

This method is, because it reduces the number of colors. For most graphics the change is hard to spot, but gradients and photos can show banding at low settings.
