About Compress JPG

Reduce the file size of JPG photos by re-encoding them at a lower JPEG quality and, if you like, smaller pixel dimensions. JPEG compression discards detail the eye is least likely to notice, so moderate settings can cut file size substantially with little visible change. PNG, WebP and HEIC images can also go in and come out as compressed JPGs.

When it helps

  • Getting photos under an upload limit for job applications, visa forms or support tickets.
  • Shrinking camera or phone photos before emailing several at once.
  • Speeding up a website or blog by serving lighter images.
  • Freeing up storage on a folder of large photos you only need for viewing.

Tips

  • 80-90% quality keeps photos looking sharp. Go lower only for thumbnails or previews.
  • Lowering Max dimensions often saves more than lowering quality. A 4000 px photo shown at 1200 px wide wastes most of its pixels.
  • Compressing the same JPG repeatedly stacks artifacts, so always start from the original file.
  • The result reports how much smaller the file got. If an already-optimized JPG barely shrinks, reduce the dimensions instead.

Good to know

Quick answers about compress jpg in your browser.

Some loss is inherent to JPEG, but at 80-90% quality it's rarely noticeable. Reducing pixel dimensions to the size the image will actually be displayed at is the other big, low-risk saving.

It was probably already saved at a low quality. Re-encoding can't squeeze much more out without visible damage, so try smaller dimensions.
