About Black & White (1-bit)
Convert an image to true 1-bit black and white, where every pixel is either pure black or pure white. A threshold slider decides the cut-off point, and optional Floyd-Steinberg or Atkinson dithering uses dot patterns to suggest gray tones, like newspaper print or classic Mac graphics.
When it helps
- Preparing images for thermal receipt printers, laser engravers or e-ink displays.
- Making clean black-and-white versions of signatures, stamps and line drawings.
- Creating a retro dithered look reminiscent of early Macintosh or Game Boy graphics.
Tips
- With no dithering, adjust the threshold until important detail survives. Lower values make the image lighter, higher values darker.
- Floyd-Steinberg dithering keeps the most tonal detail in photos. Atkinson gives a lighter, higher-contrast look with cleaner highlights.
- For scanned text and signatures, use no dithering for crisp edges.

Grayscale keeps up to 256 shades of gray. This tool outputs only black and white pixels, using dithering patterns if you want to imitate grays.
Dithering scatters black and white dots in patterns so the eye blends them into shades of gray, keeping more detail than a hard threshold.
