About Compress Audio

Large WAV, FLAC or high-bitrate audio files are awkward to email, upload or store. This tool shrinks them by re-encoding to MP3 at a lower constant bitrate, so you can directly trade file size against quality with one slider.

When it helps

  • Getting a recording under an email or messaging attachment limit
  • Making podcast episodes or lecture recordings lighter to download
  • Reducing a WAV export from a recorder or DAW to a shareable size
  • Freeing up phone storage taken by long voice memos

Tips

  • 128 kbps is a good balance for music. For speech-only recordings, 96 kbps (the lowest setting) still sounds clear.
  • File size scales directly with bitrate: halving the bitrate roughly halves the size, and a 128 kbps MP3 uses about 1 MB per minute.
  • If the input is already a 128 kbps MP3, compressing to 128 kbps again won't shrink it and will slightly reduce quality. Choose a lower value or leave it alone.

Quick answers about compress audio in your browser.

Start from the best source you have and pick the lowest bitrate that still sounds fine to you. For music, 128 to 160 kbps MP3 is usually hard to tell apart from the original on phones and laptops.

The output size depends on the bitrate you set, not on the input. If the original was already at or below that bitrate, lower the slider.

No. Files are read and processed locally in your browser, so they never leave your device.
