About Audio to Opus
Opus is a modern open codec designed for both speech and music, and it is what WhatsApp, Discord and WebRTC calls use. It holds up better at low bitrates than MP3 or AAC, which makes it good for long recordings where size matters.
When it helps
- Shrinking hours of lectures, audiobooks or meeting recordings while keeping speech clear
- Preparing voice clips for Discord bots, WebRTC apps or web players in modern browsers
- Archiving podcasts in a fraction of the space MP3 would need
Tips
- Opus sounds good at lower bitrates than other codecs. The slider starts at 96 kbps, which is already generous for speech and good for music; 128 kbps is plenty for most songs.
- Opus always works internally at 48 kHz, so files from 44.1 kHz sources are resampled. This is normal and not audible.
- Older car stereos, some smart TVs and older iPhones may not play .opus files; use MP3 or M4A for those.
