About Remove Silence
Long pauses, dead air before a recording starts and gaps between sentences make audio drag. This tool detects stretches quieter than a threshold you set and cuts them out, or, if you prefer, only trims silence from the very start and end.
When it helps
- Tightening a podcast or voice-over by removing long pauses between sentences
- Trimming the silent lead-in and tail from a batch of voice memos
- Cleaning up lecture recordings with long gaps while the speaker writes on the board
- Preparing samples or sound effects that need to start exactly on the sound
Tips
- The threshold decides what counts as silence. -45 dB suits clean recordings; raise it toward -35 dB if there is background hiss, or lower it toward -60 dB for very quiet, clean audio.
- 'Shortest gap to remove' protects natural pauses. Around 0.6 to 1 second keeps speech rhythm intact; very low values can make speech sound rushed.
- Turn on 'Only trim the start and end' when you want to keep every pause inside the recording.
Good to know
Quick answers about remove silence in your browser.
Leave the threshold around -45 dB and set the shortest gap to about 0.8 seconds. Listen to the result; if breaths or soft words are being cut, lower the threshold.
The threshold is too high, so soft speech is being treated as silence. Move it lower, for example from -35 dB to -50 dB.
