About Stereo / Mono Converter
This tool rearranges the left and right channels of a recording. You can fold stereo down to mono, turn mono into two-channel stereo, swap the sides, or keep only the left or right channel as a mono file.
When it helps
- Fixing an interview where each person was recorded on a separate channel and you only want one voice
- Converting a podcast or voice memo to mono so it sounds the same in one earbud
- Correcting a recording where left and right were wired backwards
- Turning a mono file into stereo for software or platforms that require two channels
Tips
- Stereo to mono averages both channels, so nothing is lost from either side. Use 'left only' or 'right only' when one side has a problem like hum or a dead mic.
- Mono to stereo copies the same signal to both sides; it won't create a stereo image that wasn't there.
- A mono MP3 or M4A at the same bitrate spends all its bits on one channel, so speech often sounds a little cleaner.

The recording was probably made on a single channel of a stereo track. Use 'Left channel only' or 'Right channel only' for the side with sound, or 'Stereo to Mono' to put it in both ears.
You lose the left-right separation, but not detail. For speech that separation rarely matters, and the file can be smaller.
