About CSV to XML

This tool wraps each CSV row in a row element and each value in a child element named after its column header, producing a well-formed UTF-8 XML document. You choose the names of the root and row elements. It is useful when a legacy system, feed or integration accepts XML but your data lives in a spreadsheet.

When it helps

  • Building an XML product feed or catalog import from a spreadsheet.
  • Preparing data for enterprise or government systems that only take XML uploads.
  • Creating test input for an XSLT stylesheet or an XML parser.

Tips

  • Headers are turned into valid element names: spaces and symbols become underscores, and names that start with a digit or with "xml" get a leading underscore.
  • Set the root and row names to match what the receiving system expects, for example products and product.
  • Every value becomes a child element, not an attribute. Characters like & and < are escaped automatically.
  • Without a header row, the elements are named column1, column2 and so on.

Quick answers about csv to xml in your browser.

XML element names can't contain spaces or most punctuation, so those characters are replaced with underscores to keep the document valid. Rename the header in the CSV first if you need a specific element name.

This tool doesn't validate against schemas, but its output is well-formed XML. Pick root, row and header names that match the schema, then validate in your usual XML tooling.
