About CSV to TSV

This tool converts comma-separated data to tab-separated data with a real CSV parser, not a find-and-replace. Commas inside quoted fields, such as "Smith, John" or "1,200", stay part of the value instead of splitting it. The output is ready for tools and paste targets that expect tabs.

When it helps

  • Preparing data for Unix tools like cut, awk or join that split on tabs.
  • Pasting rows into a spreadsheet so each value lands in its own cell.
  • Supplying .tsv input to research, genomics or machine-learning tools.

Tips

  • The input delimiter is detected automatically, so semicolon-separated files from European versions of Excel work too.
  • Fields that already contain a tab or a line break are wrapped in quotes in the output so the rows stay intact.
  • Empty lines are skipped, which also removes the blank row many exports leave at the end of the file.

Good to know

Quick answers about csv to tsv in your browser.

Because commas also appear inside quoted values. A plain replace would split "Austin, TX" into two columns and shift the rest of the row. Parsing the CSV properly avoids that.

Quotes that only wrapped a field are removed once the value is read. They are added back only where the TSV needs them, for example around a value that contains a tab.
